Life Is Better Outside

There is something about being outside that makes life feel a little more interesting.

Maybe it is the fresh air.

The warmth of the sun on your face.

Or simply the fact that life is happening all around you.

People walk past on their way somewhere.

Someone is carrying flowers.

Someone else is rushing to catch a train.

Two friends are talking over coffee.

A dog is pulling its owner towards something far more interesting than the direction they were supposed to be walking.

Everyone is living a life you know almost nothing about.

Where are they going?

What are they thinking about?

What happened before you crossed paths?

And where will they be by the end of the day?

There is something strangely comforting about watching the world continue around you.

Perhaps that is part of what makes being outside feel so different.

You are alone with your thoughts, yet never completely alone.

Outside, With No Particular Reason

In Mediterranean countries, being outside often seems to be a part of life rather than an activity that needs a reason.

People sit on terraces.

They gather on squares.

They drink coffee outside.

They stay outside long after dinner.

Sometimes, they seem to be doing very little at all.

And perhaps that is exactly the point.

In other places, we often treat the outdoors as somewhere we pass through.

We go outside because we need to walk to work.

Because we have to get groceries.

Because the dog needs walking.

Because we are going somewhere.

There is always a destination.

But when was the last time you went outside simply because being outside felt nicer than being inside?

No errand.

No step goal.

No place you needed to be.

Just because.

The Ordinary Feels Different Outside

Almost anything can be taken outside.

Your morning coffee.

Breakfast.

A book.

Lunch.

A phone call with a friend.

A glass of wine at the end of the day.

Even doing absolutely nothing.

None of these things are particularly extraordinary.

But somehow, outside, they feel a little different.

A coffee becomes an excuse to sit in the sun for ten minutes.

A book keeps you on a bench for an hour.

Dinner lasts longer when nobody is in a hurry to leave the table.

And doing nothing suddenly doesn't feel like doing nothing at all.

You notice the weather.

The people passing by.

The sound of conversations you cannot quite hear.

The wind.

The light changing.

Your own thoughts.

Perhaps that is why putting your phone away feels easier outside too.

There is already something to look at.

Maybe We Are Not Too Busy

It is easy to say we don't have time.

We are too busy to sit outside with a coffee.

Too busy to take a walk without somewhere to go.

Too busy to spend half an hour reading in the sun.

And sometimes, of course, life really is busy.

But perhaps it is not always about having time.

Perhaps it is also about making room for it.

Because when something becomes part of the way you live, somehow it starts to fit.

Ten minutes with your coffee outside does not require an empty afternoon.

Neither does sitting on a bench for a little while on your way home.

You do not need to completely rearrange your life.

You simply have to stop treating time outside as something that only counts when there is a reason for it.

Summer Doesn't Own the Outdoors

And then, inevitably, summer ends.

The mornings become colder.

The evenings get darker.

The terraces slowly empty.

We retreat indoors and tell ourselves we will return when the sun does.

But being outside does not have to belong to summer.

It does not need to be 25 degrees.

Sometimes you need a sweater.

Sometimes a coat.

Sometimes you only stay outside for ten minutes before deciding that, actually, inside sounds quite nice.

That still counts.

Because perhaps the Mediterranean lesson was never that life is better when the weather is perfect.

Perhaps it is simply that being outside can be part of everyday life.

Not an activity.

Not something to tick off.

Just somewhere to be.

So tomorrow, take your coffee outside.

Bring the book you keep meaning to read.

Sit somewhere without deciding how long you will stay.

Watch people pass by.

Let your mind wander.

And for once, don't ask yourself what you should be doing next.

Instead, ask yourself something much simpler.

Why am I sitting inside?

One last note…

Sometimes all an ordinary day needs is a little fresh air.
