You Don't Need a Passport to Live More Slowly
Every year, millions of people dream about escaping to the Mediterranean.
We picture long lunches beneath olive trees.
Morning coffee in the sun.
Open windows.
Fresh food shared around a table.
Evenings that seem to last forever.
We tell ourselves that life simply feels different there.
Slower.
Lighter.
Calmer.
And perhaps it does.
But I have often wondered if we are missing something.
What if it is not only the place that changes us?
What if it is the permission we give ourselves while we are there?
On holiday, we suddenly allow ourselves to do things we rarely make time for at home.
We eat breakfast outside.
We leave the windows open.
We spend hours talking around the table.
We take a walk without checking how many steps we've taken.
We cook slowly, not because we have to, but because we enjoy the process.
We make time for people.
For sunsets.
For doing very little at all.
Then we return home.
The holiday ends.
The pace returns.
Breakfast becomes something we eat standing up.
Dinner becomes something we fit between appointments.
Our hobbies quietly disappear beneath busy calendars.
And before long, we find ourselves counting down to the next holiday.
But perhaps that is the wrong thing to wait for.
Because maybe what we miss is not the Mediterranean itself.
Maybe we miss the version of ourselves that existed there.
The one who had time.
Who noticed things.
Who was not in such a hurry.
Of course, not everything can be brought home.
The sunshine is harder to pack into a suitcase.
But so much of the feeling can.
Opening the windows in the morning.
Eating outside when the weather allows.
Inviting friends over for a long dinner instead of rushing through a meal.
Taking a walk simply because it feels good.
Picking up the hobby you keep saying you'll return to when life becomes less busy.
Because perhaps life never really becomes less busy.
Perhaps we simply have to decide what deserves our time.
You don't have to wait for your next holiday to start living the way you miss living.
The Mediterranean is a place.
But it is also a reminder.
A reminder that life was never meant to be rushed through.
That not every meal needs to be quick.
Not every evening needs to be productive.
Not every hobby needs to become something useful.
Sometimes it is enough to do something simply because it brings you joy.
Perhaps living more slowly does not begin with booking a flight.
Perhaps it begins tomorrow morning.
With breakfast outside.
The windows open.
And the decision to stay at the table just a little longer.
